As has become a tradition over the past few years, on Open Monument Day, students in grades 9 and 10 at the Elisabeth-Gymnasium in Halle open the Osendorf Mausoleum to the public. The monument, which has served as a burial site since 1915, has been an important extracurricular learning site for the students for several years now. In a “denkmal aktiv” project over the past few school years, they have explored its design and symbolism, the building’s architecture, and its restoration. Through an in-depth engagement with the site and its past, the group significantly deepened its historical and cultural understanding. As the project progressed, the importance of the mausoleum and its preservation for commemorating the victims of National Socialism in the city became clear to everyone involved.
On September 13, the project group will present the results of their work to date with an information booth and guided tours of the building. There will also be an opportunity to speak with representatives of the civil society network dedicated to preserving the mausoleum.
